Personal training gives me the opportunity to share this joy with others. Being able to impart knowledge and skills about health and exercise in close relationship with clients is fulfilling. It is my aim to work in partnership with all clients and deliver a high standard of personal training.

The people. My clients are my friends who I work with closely. It is a great delight and encouragement to see them achieving their goals and improving their lives. It is enriching when clients experience positive changes in their lives, such as, decreased dependence on medications, experiencing activities they never thought possible and attaining a greater quality of life. There are not many jobs that offer all of this!

Bachelor of Science (Health and Exercise), Certified REHAB Trainer, Level 1 AIK Kettlebell Instructor, Pre and Post Natal Specialist and Boot Camp Instructor

Why did you become a personal trainer?

The name says it all: Personalising exercise to train individuals. As a university student I discovered the importance of exercise for maintaining health and preventing and managing diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Exercise is there waiting to be used and enjoyed for these purposes; yet our busy schedules keep getting in the way, not to mention lack of motivation. As a personal trainer my time can be dedicated to developing and executing personal exercise programs to improve the health and wellbeing of many individuals.

I really enjoy interacting with people and being active, I love the outdoors and I had a degree in Health and Exercise science. Combined they seemed to make the perfect match in Personal Training with Coastal Bodies.

What is the best thing about being a personal trainer?

Exercising outside with great individuals

Qualifications:

BSc in Exercise Physiology, Certificate in Advanced Postural Assessment & Applied Exercise Prescription, Certificate in Mike Robertson Low Back Care, Powerlifting Coach, Certified REHAB Trainer and Level 2 AIK Certified Kettlebell Instructor

Why did you become a personal trainer?

Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to know how things work and my whole life I’ve been involved in team and individual sports. So, becoming a personal trainer was a natural progression for me. I have a passion for analysing body movements and optimising them for best results, be it in sports performance, recovery from injury, fat loss or health promoting effects.

What is the best thing about being a personal trainer?

The best thing about personal training is the clients’ responses when they reach their goals! When a client who has had knee pain every time they exercise can now train pain-free. When a client improves their medical check-up results significantly. The sense of pride and achievement a client feels in their improvements in strength and fitness. That is the best part about being a personal trainer.

What makes you a great personal trainer?

I believe two things make me stand out from other personal trainers. I will never stop finding ways to improve my skills as a personal trainer to get my clients better results, faster. And I always strive to be the best part of my clients’ day.

Why should people choose a Coastal Bodies personal trainer?

The Coastal Bodies team is a step above the rest of the field in terms of qualifications and passion. We treat personal training as a career and not just another job and that means our clients get the best.

Accredited Practicing Dietitian

Name: Jessica Lewis

Qualifications:

Tertiary studies with first class honours

As the newest employee Coastal Bodies, I am so excited to introduce myself as I jump on board with such a great team of inspired and energetic fitness instructors. My name is Jessica Lewis, I am an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, and have just completed my tertiary studies with first class honours. I am so excited to start working with clients and trainers from Coastal Bodies so soon after completing my studies because I feel that the knowledge you gain from university is the most up to date and relevant information you can pass on.

The best part about being a Dietitian is the human element. Someone once told me that everything you need to know to be a Dietitian is found on the back of the packet. To that comment I laughed (first and foremost), but then I challenged him by asking what kind of a packet prints things like personalized dietary plans, constant dietary monitoring or changes to one’s circumstances which need careful dietary consideration or even things like coping strategies. He then admitted to me that he actually really struggled to make any sense of the nutrition panels on packets! For me, being a dietitian is all of things plus so much more, and that is what makes me so passionate about it.

In this age, you only have to turn the corner to see one of thousands of buzzwords such as diet, elimination, detox or anything that will give you a quick fix. I was always taught that believing the first thing you read is naivety, so I decided to challenge a few of these ideas and study the best ways of getting fit, healthy and in shape. I did this through 4 years at the University of Sydney, and didn’t look back for a second! I feel that the most important tool I can possibly impart is knowledge, as I believe that is the best key to success- no matter what your goals may be.

I often get asked “why is it so important to combine diet and exercise?” (Usually from people who are happy to stick with one, but not both). To best describe it, picture that your body is a truck and you have to drive it from Sydney to Melbourne. The amount of time it will take you to do the trip is dependant on how heavy the load in the truck is and how fast you can accelerate. This is similar to your body, in such that a heavy load will take a lot longer to pull along, and use more energy to get going. If you are careful about the number and types of calories you eat, you will have a lighter load to pull along through your training sessions; making it easier to get up your speed and efficiency. Naturally, this is the best way to arrive at your goal with a clear head and enough time to pick out a dress.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

Sport and exercise has been an integral part of my life to date. To be able to help others realise the numerous benefits of exercise and the joy of reaching lifelong goals is the reason why I have chosen Personal Training as a career path.

What is the best thing about being a personal trainer?

The best thing about being a Personal Trainer is being able to see the smile on a client’s face when they have made improvements both physically and psychologically. This smile puts an even bigger smile on your face knowing you have had a large role in this improvement.

What makes you a great personal trainer?

Patience is key as a Personal Trainer. Clients that haven’t exercised for long periods of time need time to change their negative lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle. Also, flexibility is needed. If one method isn’t working, you have to work out methods that will. I believe I possess an abundance of patience as well as flexibility.

Why should people choose a Coastal Bodies personal trainer?

Throughout my three years studying Exercise and Sport Science, a core teaching was how an appropriate environment will enhance motivation. What better environment than the picturous locations that Coastal Bodies Personal Trainer’s conduct their sessions.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

I feel passionately about good health and fitness and I am very interested in the human body and the benefits of exercise in reducing associated health problems. I believe strongly that exercise and a well balanced diet is a great way to keep healthy, feel good about yourself and boost energy levels.

What is the best thing about being a personal trainer?

Being a personal trainer enables you to share your knowledge and be supportive towards the health and wellbeing of the individual. One of the best things about being a personal trainer is being able to give someone the motivation to exercise and guide them to push past their boundaries in order to achieve their goals. It is rewarding to play a role in helping someone improve their quality of life.

What makes you a great personal trainer?

I believe I possess the qualities that make a good peoples person. I am very dedicated to helping each individual client reach their goals by being there for support and motivation and educating clients about the benefits of exercise and how they can improve their lifestyle. In my nursing degree I am learning a lot about the human body and how it functions which has helped me to be a better personal trainer by complimenting the skills I have gained from my personal training course. In my nursing course to date I have been exposed to different walks of life and facets of human nature, which I believe, are teaching me to be a good communicator and listener. I am a motivated person who is keen to help others make a positive change in their life.

Personal Fitness Trainer

Name: Brian Wardle

Qualifications:

BA in Exercise Physiology, Certificate 4 Personal Trainer, Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor, and Certificate 4 in Remedial Massage, Certified REHAB Trainer, Beginning a Masters of Physiotherapy in March 2012

Why did you become a Personal Trainer?

I have always liked people, exercise, and health. So it was a natural progression from doing my own training to training others also. Having a job where you get to have such an influence on someone’s health and mental state is pretty cool. There aren’t that many jobs which allow you to do that, so I’m pretty happy that this is what I get to do while doing my Masters..

What is the best thing about being a Personal Trainer?

Watching my client’s health improve. Taking part in a gym program where you get to work really closely with a personal trainer who is passionate about health and fitness is a fantastic way of improving your own health and fitness. I love thinking back to the day when some of my clients walked in the door and comparing that to how they look now. Now they’re lighter on their feet, stand taller, have better postures, and are leaner, or more muscular. Helping someone get a taste for being healthy is really satisfying. Getting a taste and sticking to it will increase your energy, make you lean up, and most important of all will give you a more positive outlook on every-day life.

What makes you a great Personal Trainer?

A good mixture of knowledge and personality. Well that’s what I like to think anyway. It is vitally important that a trainer has a thorough knowledge of biomechanics, anatomy, and how to structure an exercise program to maximise results. But if you cant connect with your clients and motivate them so they push themselves, then results will be below average. When someone comes to me and tells me with sincerity that they really want to fix something, I become committed to them. I treat them like a project and take on the challenge with them. I help teach them what makes a good diet, how to overcome hurdles getting in the way of their goals, and most importantly I help them to slowly turn bad habits into good ones. The only reason clients come to me in the first place is because of an imbalance in their habits, so shifting the balance is key.

I’m also able to give my clients a more complete service as I’m a qualified massage therapist. Training people allows you to determine postural imbalances, as well tight and restricted muscles/joints. Having the extra skill of being able to release tight and sore muscles, while providing the ultimate way to unwind is definitely something my clients enjoy.

Why should people choose a Coastal Bodies Personal Trainer?

I have trained in a lot of gyms over the years, but never in one like Coastal Bodies. Coastal Bodies feels like you’re training at a friends house. It’s small enough so you’ll only be ever sharing the gym with four or five others at a time. This way everyone gets plenty of attention and never leaves without getting a solid workout. Also the staff here are not your usual bunch of personal trainers that you’ll find at your local ‘McGym’. Most of the trainers are university qualified and have further qualifications than the bare minimum Cert-4 Fitness Trainer course. Best of all we undergo weekly educational sessions so that our knowledge and effectiveness as trainers is constantly improving.
